My boss needs 'High Resolution' images of products...what?
So, I'm thinking of buying a digital camera now for this puropose.
How much would you think will qualify as "HIGH RES"? 5megapixels? 7?8?
Please help me.
How big an image would I be able to print with an [x] megapixel image without any quality degrading?
You are talking about advertising photography ... High resolution shots of products usually means using transparancy film. Medium format, usually.
However you may be able to shoot high enough resolution images using a Nikon D3 or Canon 1Ds, Mark III with appropriate lens.
Since these images will be printed (using a printing press is my guess) you will be supplying the printer with some high res TIFF files, so need a camera that can shoot in RAW (DSLR cameras can do this)
In reference to your comment about the number of pixels on the cameras sensor ....
Pixel count is one of four factors that can help you determine the quality and resolution you can expect from a digital camera in order of importance.
* Quality of the lens
* The quality and sophistication of the analog to digital converter within the camera.
* Sensor size
* Pixel count

Since the camera is only half the hardware you need, be sure you have a good computer with at least 2GB of RAM, a large hard drive with a CD/DVD burner and the latest copy of Adobe Photoshop installed.
Once you have those items, you will be able to use your studio photographic skills and computer skills to produce perfect images for your bosses products.
