People with Arthritis/ Chronic Pain in multiple areas of the body?
I volunteer with a arthritis foundation that helps people cope and live well with a number of related conditions, and I also have severe inflammatory arthritis in every joint from my skull to my knees.
I am putting together a presentation at the moment with advice on ways to manage pain when any part of your body/ multiple bones are inflamed.
This includes different sleeping positions when shoulders/ lower back and pelvis/ hips/ neck/ knees/ ribs are in pain, as well as ways to sit on a sofa chair/ kitchen chair/ office chair/ car seat to be more comfortable.
Also I am focusing on how to do daily duties like cooking (e.g. hard/ impossible to lift heavy pots/ bend down to kitchen cupboards etc).
I am looking for input from other sufferers on what personal techniques they have developed when coping with their own specific pain, and also if there is any task/ daily occurance that they have found particularly difficult to manage when inflamed.
Thanks!
hey, well i'm 19 years old and had a car crash 2 years ago where the car flipped and doctors thought i suffered a spinal fracture, they cleared me but less than 2 months afterwards i started getting really bad pain down my left butt cheek, thigh and all the way to my toes, i was diagnosed with a herniated disk L5/S1 pressing on my sciatic nerve after a long ordeal of gp's, physios, neurosurgeon, opiates and other very strong meds, i also had a nerve block injection to try to relieve the pain however it made everything 100 times worse and i developed sciatica in my right leg then way worse than the left ever was! . i was previously a waitress and bar maid but i physically couldn't lift plates, trays etc anymore and my legs were going from under me so i had to quit my job! i am also a student in college and sitting for 8/9 hours a day was killing me for the last 2 years, i just had to skip class and catch up at home. driving was very painful, but i pushed myself to get on with things instead of letting it ruin my life. i finally had surgery to remove the disk last month, it was successful however there is a strict 3 weeks bed rest following which for me was tough. before my surgery the hospital physio came in to me to show me how to manoeuvre after it, getting out of bed by using my arms to sit me up and support me, the exercises i must do to build up the muscle again etc, i was told no sitting until 3 weeks, no lifting, bending, hovering, stretching for 4 months! when lying on my side a few days after i had really bad burning nerve pain from my hip to my groin and was only relieved when i got up. i couldn't lie on the couch as it was too soft so just the bed for me. however 4 weeks on and i still get leg pain from lying too long, feels like i just ran a few miles! i have a numbness in my toes and a general weakness in both legs following the surgery but no pain like previously. i found it very hard to do stuff in the house, i have a tendency to drop things and of course no bending.. luckily we still had a "grabber" from another family health issue, this was my best friend for the 3 weeks, even in the shower dropping soap and not being able to get it, putting on socks and shoes etc i can't understand how the hospital doesn't give patients these aids following this surgery as without it i would have been lost! now i can start to bend but only slowly keeping my back straight and using my calf muscles only to stand up which is tough! i found sleeping on my tummy with a cushion just under my lower belly/pelvis to be the best position for my back while sleeping as i couldn't lie on my back while the wound was healing. Stairs are also tough and walking on uneven ground. i am very fearful of people bumping into me as i don't feel stable yet. i hate having to ask family and friends to pick stuff up for me as i feel like a nuisance, i am aware this could be classed wrong for your topic however i am still in pain and more fragile and restricted now while healing than i was before obviously. hope it helps though
