Electrostatic protection for fixing computer parts?
I've recently been fixing a few laptops for family members (power sockets etc) however to get access I often have to remove ram etc. That coupled with the fact I want to build myself a new computer makes me concerned about Electrostatic discharge.
To combat this I brought myself a wrist strap but I'm not sure where exactly to ground it, so I've been looking at a MAT with wrist strap product which grounds to the mains earth.
Would this be a good/suitable product to use?

Does it still need to be grounded to a metal earth since it would be grounded to mains earth?
Suitable as long as you use the grounding it that connects to anything that goes to earth or ground. It could be the metal water pipe, metal post or rod that is partially buried to the ground. It is useless if you just put the mat on top of carpet, vinyl or wooden floor.
But if you take certain precautions like I do, you won't need that mat and strap. I AVOID working w/ PC parts in a place with carpet, plastic chair and table. I discharge myself of static by touching a concrete wall, floor or metal railing/grills before touching PC parts. I've done over a dozen builds and rebuilds and another dozen of repairs of laptops and desktops over the past several years and I've not damaged a single PC component due to static electricity.
