Just some questions about vet school and zoology programs.?

I'm only 14 and I really don't know what I want to do with my life... However, I want to be semi-prepared and being a vet is something I might like to do someday, since I love animals. Basically any answers that could tell me a little bit about being a veterinarian and vet school would be very appreciated as well as the type of stuff you have to do on a daily basis as well as what you think it takes to be a vet. Also, any college suggestions or just a general outline of what kinds of grades and things I should be doing in High School to get into veterinary colleges in the first place. I'm also kind of interested in more exotic animals. I think it'd be neat to treat more wild animals, that'd you find in a zoo, but more of a rescue sort of thing, where you help wild animals that can't survive in the wild. Thanks!

1. Make great grades in high school so that you can get into a good university for undergrad. Grades and extracurricular activities are very important...also take many science and math classes in high school. You will need to take required undergrad courses before you can go to vet school. So, make EXCELLENT grades in undergrad so that you can get into vet school. Vet school is really competitive to get into and can be very difficult. Many people complete 4 years of undergrad and get their bachelor's degree before going to vet school.
2. There are only 28 vet schools in the US which another reason why it is so hard to get accepted. Start getting hours working for/observing veterinarians. This will be especially important when you get into undergrad. Also, in college do internships with vets, zoo, wildlife organization, etc. to build your resume so that you will have a better chance of getting accepted.
3. I will be honest with you, vet school is hard but totally worth it. You will study like you have never studies before and probably won't understand what I am telling you about how hard it can be until you are there. But, you will spend your life caring for animals - the most rewarding career in my opinion.
4. There are some vet schools that do more exotics than others....when you get to the point where you will be applying to vet school (probably 8 yrs from now), then you should find out which schools do more exotics. However, remember that your instate school will be cheaper!!!
5. On a daily basis, small animal vets will see patients, rechecks, do surgeries, paperwork and run blood tests to name a few things. Daily tasks vary from day to day. Wildlife and zoo vets have an even more varied schedule which is why I love this field.
6. You can definitely work with wild animals/zoo animals, it just takes more work! After spending 4 years in vet school (after 2-4 years of undergrad), you will most likely have to do a year long internship and then a 3 year residency to get a good job in this field. Of course there are always rare exception but this is the most common path

HOPE THIS HELPS!!! I know it can be very overwhelming but don't give it....this is a great career!!!
