If you are strictly using this outfit for Cat-fishing I'd suggest you get the 6740 sized President. It's larger spool diameter will allow you to use heavier lines equaling 14-17LB.
Berkley Big Game 15LB line is a good "general" line for Cats. If you intend to go for the "monsters" (Cats in the 25LB PLUS range) then think about buying some Power Pro Braided line 10/40.
I suggest you purchase a ONE PIECE 7' rod in MH, (or medium depending on style) action. Unless you absolutely MUST break your rod down, (to fit it into your car, Etc.) stay away from 2 piece rods. Two piece rods have a tendency to "chip" at the ferrule, (the ferrule is where the two pieces come together), OR , after a couple uses, simply won't come apart.
Bottomline?- A solid, one piece, rod will ALWAYS be stronger than 2 pieces fitted together, (period).
Ugly Stiks, (and Ugly Stik Lite) are a good brand for Cats.
Here's a few links to some good Ugly Stik Rods:
- This is a good rod. You would want the 6' 9" M- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_71840____SearchResults
- Here is a perfect "general" one piece rod for small to medium-sized cats. You would want the 7' MH- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_17946____SearchResults
In regard to a tackle box- Cat-fishing does not require a huge tackle box. You could easily hold 99% of all your tackle needs in a simple soft-sided box. Here is a great example of a soft bag:
- This is one of the best bags currently on the market. I own one. Please read the reviews.- http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=product&cmCat=Related_IPL_123805&id=0038875121302a
Hope this helps ya?
