Is David Stern the worst commissioner in sports history?
The past several seasons put a spotlight on one of the most arrogant men in sports: David Stern. While you do not come into a position like Stern’s without some level of arrogance, recent events place him a step above:
-The suspension of Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw during the Suns/Spurs playoff series interfered with the outcome of the series. Never has thugery been so rewarded. Horry should have sat for the rest of the playoffs, not for two games. The penalty did not fit the crime.
-More importantly, where was Stern when the Los Angles Lakers became the Memphis Lakers? It was not so long ago that a commissioner would have had the testicular fortitude to reject the trade that brought Pau Gasol to the Lakers as against the competitive interests of the game. Where was Stern?
Is Stern a non-commissioner? Is he the worst ever?
I disagree with everything Steven R. said about the Stoudemire-Diaw suspension, and the Horry cheap shot on Nash. If you watched the game, you saw Nash going full-tilt down the sideline, and Horry hip-check him into the scorer's table. The idea that Nash flopped is ludicrous nonsense. It was a cheap, dirty, yet smart play by Horry. He knew exactly what he was doing, and got the best possible result he hoped for when Stoudemire and Diaw came off the bench. But Stern really blew it when he failed to suspend Duncan and Bowen for leaving THEIR bench earlier in the same game. What a hypocritical double standard. The excuse was that the Spurs action was somehow "different" from that of the Suns. Stern flat-out blew it, and the Suns suspension fiasco lowered his reputation another notch.
